Malaysia bauxite - what’s it all about?

By: Paul Adkins | Comments: 0 | Category: Bauxite and Alumina

Malaysia has been the talking point of the aluminium industry for some months now, as a result of the boom in exports of bauxite to China. In 2014, Malaysia sold 3.5 million tonnes to China, after selling almost nothing in 2013.

But for most of us, it’s just not possible to go there and check it out for ourselves. Here at AZ China though, we are doing the next best thing. Here are some photos of some of the activity in Malaysia surrounding the mining and shipping of bauxite. My thanks to my friend BigCat for sharing these with us.

I have put some captions under each photo, to explain what each is about.

We will be providing more information on this to our clients and subscribers. I have many more photos. If you aren’t a subscriber or client already, contact us for more information.

Side-unloading trucks deliver bauxite to the port, where different ores are blended before loading on the ship. It is important to blend the ores to reduce some of the problems.

Port facilities are under stress, so some vessels are loaded via barge. Here we see a barge being loaded before it goes out to be unloaded into a vessel.

Vessels using a berth have just one day to load. Ships must use their own gear, and must be rated with a minimum loading rate.
